How a $90 Astec Power Supply Turned Into a $2,800 Lesson (and a Bentley GT Story)

Way back in late October 2024, I was not thinking about power supplies. I had Halloween costumes on the brain. I was updating the Halloween costume contest sign-up sheet when my phone rang. It was Danny, the plant maintenance lead. “The control panel on plant two is dark. No screen, no nothing. I think the power supply died.”

For context: I'm the office administrator for a paving and materials company. I handle purchasing for about 90 people across three locations. I order office supplies, shop supplies, some safety gear, and occasionally a critical part for the equipment guys. Our asphalt plants include Astec equipment, so when Danny said “Astec power supply,” I should have paid attention. Instead, I did what I always do: I searched for the cheapest option.

When I first started buying parts, I got it wrong

Honestly, this wasn't my first rodeo. When I started this job, I assumed the lowest quote was the right call. I learned that lesson more than once. But I still had to relearn it with this part.

Danny sent me a photo of the failed unit. It was an Astec power supply with a part number that looked like the kind of code only an engineer could love. I typed “astec power supply” into my search bar and got a long list. The first result was about $90. The one from an industrial controls distributor was $530. I called Danny and said, “There's a $90 option. Want me to order it?” He said, “I mean, it's the same thing, right? Probably.” That's where the mistake started.

To be fair, Danny wasn't trying to sabotage anything. He was tired. It had already been a long week, and he had an inflatable dinosaur costume waiting at home for Halloween. He didn't have time to become a power supply expert. Neither did I. That's a red flag in itself.

The Bentley GT moment

By mid-afternoon, Tom showed up in my office. Tom is our operations director. He drives a Bentley GT—an older one, but still. When he's unhappy, you know it.

“Tell me the good news,” he said.

“The cheapest option is $90 and it ships overnight,” I said.

He looked at me the way you'd look at a teenager who just backed into a mailbox. “I didn't buy this car by choosing the $90 part. Get the real one.”

I told him the real one was $530. He said, “That's still cheaper than a day of downtime.” In my head, I thought he was being dramatic. In reality, he was being accurate. The plant was already down.

The first replacement arrived

I compromised. I ordered the $90 part anyway, because I'm stubborn and because “guaranteed overnight” sounded good. I figured the distributor's price was just a premium for a name brand. Everything I'd read said that generic industrial power supplies are basically the same.

The $90 part arrived the next morning. It was actually still before Halloween, so the costume contest deadline was still on. The package was smaller than I expected. The connectors were close to the original—close, but not identical. Danny tried to make it work anyway. He's a smart guy, and sometimes you can adapt a connector and it's fine. This time, the power supply powered up for about ten seconds, made a clicking noise, and then flipped a fault light.

That's when Danny looked at the label and said, “This isn't really an Astec power supply. It's a generic supply with a sticker that looks similar.”

I went back to the listing. The description was careful. It used words like “replacement for” and “compatible with.” Looking back, maybe that should have been a sign. “Compatible with” is not the same as “this is the thing.” But in the moment, I was so focused on the cost that I missed the part number mismatch.

How much does Henry weigh?

While all this was going on, we had a side problem. We needed to get the original Astec power supply to an electrical shop a few towns over, and the fastest option was the company utility vehicle. The payload limit was about 500 pounds. The parts guy, Henry, is a big guy. I'm not going to give you his exact weight, but someone genuinely asked, “How much does Henry weigh?” because if I drove with the part and Henry rode in the back, we'd be over the limit.

Henry did not love that question. He ended up driving separately. The part went in the cab with me. It sounds like a scene from a bad office sitcom, but it's real. It also tells you something about how quickly a simple replacement turns into a logistics circus.

The real fix

We returned the $90 unit. The distributor shipped the exact Astec replacement overnight. It cost $530, plus shipping, plus the time we'd already wasted. It arrived the next morning and Danny had it installed in about an hour. The plant restarted around noon.

I did some back-of-the-envelope math afterward. The downtime cost us somewhere in the range of $2,000 in lost production. The two days of troubleshooting probably added another $800 in labor. So the cheap power supply ended up costing around $2,800. The “expensive” one cost $530 and didn't add anything to the mess.

I don't have hard data on how many counterfeit or mislabeled Astec power supplies are out there. What I can say anecdotally is that the distributor told us they'd seen this exact part number copied before. He said, “If the price seems too good, it's usually not a deal—it's a trap.” I thought that was just sales talk. It wasn't.

I'm not an electrical engineer, so I won't pretend to explain every spec difference. What I know is that the nameplate matters.

What I'd do differently

If you need an Astec power supply for an asphalt plant or any industrial control cabinet, here's the honest version: don't trust a low price alone. Check the part number on the actual nameplate. Call a supplier that deals with industrial electronics and ask them to cross-reference it. If they ask for a serial number, that's a good sign.

And if you're working with a generic application, not a plant controller, a cheaper supply might be fine. Honest. But the keyword is “might.” For a unit tied to a $2 million plant, the right part is worth the extra $440.

Tom was right about that Bentley GT. It wasn't just a status symbol. It also happens to be a reminder that expensive mistakes are usually the ones we choose to make in the name of saving money. The next time someone asks me if I want to save money on a critical part, I'm going to ask a better question: “How much will it cost when it fails?”

And I'll make sure Henry has a ride before I ask the follow-up question.
